What is a linear graph?
A linear graph is a straight line drawn by an equation like y = mx + b. The linear graph definition is simple: any equation whose points form a single straight line. A linear graph equation can be written as y = mx + b, Ax + By = C, y = b for a horizontal line, or x = a for a vertical line. If you are learning slope, how steep a line is, where it crosses each axis, or how to read points off a line, type the equation and read the slope, intercepts, and forms directly.
A common linear graph example is y = 2x + 3: a positive linear graph that rises from left to right with slope 2. By contrast y = -3x + 5 is a negative linear graph that falls from left to right with slope -3. Use the point explorer to test any x-value, or switch on two-point mode to build the line from two coordinates you already know.
A non linear graph is anything that is not a straight line. For example y = x^2 curves into a parabola and y = 1/x breaks at x = 0, so neither counts as a linear graph even though both can be drawn on the same grid.

Linear graphing FAQ
What is a linear graph?
A linear graph is the straight line drawn by a first-degree equation. The linear graph definition covers any equation whose points form one unbroken straight line, such as y = 2x + 3 or 2x + y = 6.
How to graph a linear equation?
Type the linear graph equation, for example y = 2x + 3, and the line plots instantly. Drag to pan and scroll to zoom. Set x = 0 for the y-intercept and y = 0 for the x-intercept. No account needed.
How to graph linear equations from two points?
Switch on two-point mode, enter both coordinates, and the tool builds the line through them with its slope, linear graph equation, and intercepts. Try (0, 3) and (2, 7) to get y = 2x + 3.
What is the linear graph equation?
A linear graph equation is any equation of a straight line: slope-intercept form y = mx + b, standard form Ax + By = C, horizontal y = b, or vertical x = a. The overview panel rewrites your entry into slope-intercept and standard form automatically.
What is the difference between a positive and negative linear graph?
A positive linear graph rises from left to right because its slope m is greater than zero, for example y = 2x + 3. A negative linear graph falls from left to right because its slope is less than zero, for example y = -3x + 5. A zero slope is horizontal.
What is a non linear graph?
A non linear graph is any graph that is not a straight line. y = x^2 curves into a parabola and y = 1/x breaks at x = 0, so use the main graphing calculator for those instead of this linear graph tool.
How do I find the slope of a line?
For y = mx + b the slope is m. From two points use m = rise / run. For y = 2x + 3 the slope is 2.
How do I find the x-intercept and y-intercept?
Set y = 0 and solve for x to get the x-intercept; set x = 0 to get the y-intercept. For y = 2x + 3 they are (-1.5, 0) and (0, 3).
What does an undefined slope mean?
The line is vertical, of the form x = a. It has no slope value and never crosses the y-axis (except x = 0 itself).
Can a line have no intercepts?
A horizontal line other than y = 0 never crosses the x-axis, and a vertical line other than x = 0 never crosses the y-axis.
